I was repairing Betas in 1985 when they were in their heyday. I know what usually wears out on these VCRS. There are many Betamax VCRs being sold on eBay. Most have not been used in years. If you know anything about electronics. You know that you cannot leave a complicated piece of electronics in a closet for 15 years without doing some maintenance on it before putting it back into service. If you are planning to copy your valuable home movies of your family to dvd. Please invest in a refurbished unit so your tapes won't be damaged! You will see many auctions for Beta VCRs that have descriptions as follows... "I don't have a beta tape to test it with", "It powers up and was working the last time I used it 10 years ago!" "I got it at an estate sale and don't know anything about it" "Played an old Bob Hope Movie with no problems!" "Power light comes on Sold AS IS!"
