Today's DVRs still can't do everything that the ReplayTV was able to do 5 years ago; especially when it comes to its network capabilities.   As you are probably aware this ReplayTV (from Sonic Blue) has the Automatic Commercial Advance and IVS (Internet Video Sharing) capabilities that were remove from the 5500 series.    Requirements for using this ReplayTV A connection to the ReplayTV service is required: Via telephone or Ethernet connection. Used to receive channel guide updates from the ReplayTV service.  The Ethernet connectivity is what gives ReplayTV all the great networking features. Great features beyond the average DVR The 5500 Series models have Automatic Commercial Skip and IVS (Internet Video Sharing) which is no longer available on the newer 5500 Series. Commercial skip is incredible. This makes the 5000 series more desirable.  In fact, as you can see by searching eBay's completed auction listings, they typically sell for much more than the equivalent 5500 series models. The higher cost is well worth it. Networking multiple ReplayTVs allows recording and watching shows on other ReplayTVs on the network (Multiple ReplayTVs on a home network adds an amazing amount of flexibility) DVArchive: When your ReplayTV is part of a home network, you can use a free computer program called DVArchive (download at www.dvarchive.org) for even more flexibility.  DVArchive runs on your PC or Mac creating a virtual ReplayTV.  This creates the ability to store shows on a computer's hard drive. These archived shows are accessible from your ReplayTV when DVArchive is running.  You can also watch the shows on your PC or laptop since they are mpeg2 formatted video files.  Standard DVR features: Pause live TV and resume play at your convenience. Instant replay of live or recorded TV.   There's a great "7 seconds back" button on the remote that's perfect for those "What did he say" situations when you missed something in a show or a movie.  Of course, there is the standard rewind and fast forward buttons too.
